Snow in Texas

It very rarely snows in Texas but this last weekend we had over a foot of snow! It was absolutely beautiful.

Could've come like a mighty storm

With all the strength of a hurricane

You could've come like a forest fire

With the power of heaven in Your flame

But you came like a winter snow

Quiet and soft and slow

Falling from the sky in the night

To the earth below

Even though this song is about Jesus' coming as a baby to earth it also reminds me of the time in the Bible when God spoke Elijah in a quiet and gentle voice:

11The Lord said, "Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by."

Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. 12After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. 13When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.

George Washington's Rules of Civility and Decent Behavior

When George Washington was sixteen he copied out by hand 110 rules of behavior as part of a penmanship exercise assigned to him by his schoolmaster. I think the rules are very interesting and show how people ought to show respect and kindness to one another.
Here are the first six:(my notes are in parenthesis)

The Rules:

1. Every action done in company, ought to be with some sign of respect, to those that are present.( In other words, treat those that you are around with respect.)
2. When in company, put not your hands to any part of the body, not usually discovered.
3. Show nothing to your friend that might affright them.(Do not embarrass them.)
4. In the presence of others sing not to yourself with a humming noise, nor drum with your fingers or feet.(I am guilty of drumming my fingers.)
5. If you cough, sneeze, or yawn, do it not loud but privately; and speak not in your yawning, but put your handkerchief or hand before your face and turn aside,
6. Sleep not when others speak, sit not when others stand, speak not when you should hold your peace, walk not when others stop.

Happy New Year!!!!!

Merry Christmas!

I love Christmas! I love being with my family, eating delicious food, opening presents and getting to see my siblings open theirs, seeing all of the beautiful decorations and lights, and listening to Christmas music.
One of my most favorite Christmas carols is O Holy Night. It is such a beautiful song that tells of how our loving savior came to earth on the first Christmas to save the world from sin and give us the opportunity to live with him forever. None of us could even begin to imagine how amazing that is, that He, who is perfect, left heaven and came to an imperfect earth, knowing that he would die so that He could save us from our sin! I hope that you all remember this as you celebrate Christmas and take some time to thank him for coming so long ago to die for you.

A few weeks ago some friends of mine invited my sister and I to a civil war era ball. adanceintime.blogspot.com The costumes were amazing! The guys put nail in their boots so they would make noise when they danced. We had a lot of fun.
